Below is a list of the most common reasons that can qualify you to vote by mail:

List of Common Reasons

  • Will you be outside of Fairfax County (such as Arlington or DC) for any period of time for work, business or personal reasons on Nov. 8?
  • Are you or your spouse going to school or college outside of Fairfax?
  • Will you be working and commuting for 11 hours or more between 6am and 7pm on Nov. 8 (even if you never leave Fairfax County)?
  • Are you disabled or ill, taking care of a disabled or ill family member, or are you pregnant?
  • Are you a first responder?
  • Will you or your spouse be on active military duty outside of Fairfax on Nov. 8?
  • Will you be temporarily residing outside of the US on Nov. 8?

Virginia Absentee Ballot Application

You can apply to vote absentee as early as one year before the election. Ballots are available 45 days before most elections. The deadline for receipt of your application to vote absentee by mail is 5:00 PM the Tuesday before the election. You can contact the State Board of Elections at 800-552-9745 or
